The Garden State nickname stuck

after the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia, where New Jersey was compared to

“an immense barrel, filled with good things to eat

and open at both ends, with Pennsylvanians grabbing from one end and the New Yorkers from the other. “  Despite being the most densely populated state,

NJ now protects nearly 30 percent of its land and water through land trusts, non-profits and

government agencies, hosts over 9,000 farms,

and supports well over 100 seasonal farmers’ markets

in nearly every county from Sussex to Cape May.

This series celebrates the bounty of

these fields and businesses.

Ten percent of the proceeds from the sale of the Home-Grown pieces will be donated to TASK, the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen,

to support their artists' cooperative

known as the A-TEAM Artists of Trenton.  Learn more about TASK:
